CAD MCP servers: a practical guide and comparison

Updated

A CAD MCP server lets an AI assistant such as Claude or Cursor build and change CAD models. Pick by what you already use: Fusion has a built-in server from Autodesk, FreeCAD and Blender have popular open-source ones, Onshape has an official server for FeatureScript, and if you want no CAD app at all, code-CAD servers (build123d, SMLib, ClassCAD, OpenSCAD) let the AI write the model as a script.

Below: what these servers are, a comparison of ten of them, and copy-paste setup for Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and ChatGPT. We make one of them (the hosted BuildCAD AI MCP server), so it is described with the same fields as the others, from its source code.

What a CAD MCP server does

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard, published by Anthropic in 2024, for connecting AI assistants to tools. A server lists its tools (“create a sketch”, “run this CAD script”, “take a screenshot”), and the assistant decides when to call them. Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT all act as MCP clients. CAD servers come in two kinds:

  • Bridges to a CAD app (Fusion, FreeCAD, Onshape, Blender, SolidWorks, AutoCAD): the AI works inside the program you already use, and the result stays in its file format and history. The app must be installed and open (or, for Onshape, your account connected).
  • Code-CAD kernels (build123d, SMLib, ClassCAD, OpenSCAD): the AI writes the model as a script that a geometry kernel runs. Nothing to install beyond Python or Node, and the script is a parametric model you can rerun with other dimensions.

What to compare

  • Feedback. A language model cannot see the geometry it makes. Servers that send back pictures, measurements and validity checks let it catch a hole in the wrong place or a wall that came out 0.4 mm thick; without them, you are the one checking.
  • Exact solids or meshes. B-rep kernels (OpenCASCADE in build123d and FreeCAD, SMLib, ClassCAD, Fusion, Onshape's Parasolid) export STEP you can keep editing. OpenSCAD and Blender produce meshes: fine for printing, hard to edit later.
  • Local or hosted. Local servers (stdio) run on your computer and work in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. Claude on the web and ChatGPT only reach remote servers over HTTPS.
  • Cost and licence. Most servers are free; the CAD program behind them or the engine's commercial tier may not be.

CAD MCP servers compared

Ten servers with real users or an official vendor behind them, as of 2026-10-16. “What the AI can check” lists what the server sends back to the model, from its documentation; we have not benchmarked them against each other.

Each server, with its setup

Snippets are copied from each project's README or docs (October 2026). The client section below explains where each kind goes.

BuildCAD AI MCP

BuildCAD AI (this site)

Hosted build123d with five tools: get_cad_guide (how to write a parametric model, with 3D-printing defaults), list_designs, get_design, run_model (runs the script and returns errors, per-part checks and pictures) and save_design (saves a version and returns a link where you move sliders and download STL, 3MF or STEP). Your AI subscription does the thinking; we run the CAD. It is built for parts you will print: the model gets the same 3D printing rules and fastener tables as our own designer, and your measured printer fit if you saved one.

Limits: you need a free account, one run at a time, 300 runs per day. It does not drive Fusion, FreeCAD or any desktop CAD. Full setup on the BuildCAD AI MCP page.

Claude Code

build123d-mcp

pzfreo (open source)

The most complete local build123d server: renders, measurements, hole finding, a printability check and an export gate that refuses invalid solids. Its README reports that on the CADGenBench benchmark (June 2026) it raised the same model's score from 0.360 to 0.457. A good choice if you want everything on your machine and are happy with Python and uv.

    }
  }
}

Its README places the config in ~/.claude/mcp.json for Claude Code; Claude Code reads ~/.claude.json and .mcp.json, so use claude mcp add instead.

smlibpy MCP

AWV Informatik (makers of ClassCAD)

A Python CAD library on the SMLib NURBS kernel, from the company behind ClassCAD, with an MCP server built in. Its snapshot tool is strong on visual checks: technical drawings, sections, x-ray, zebra stripes and before and after pixel diffs. Also a Claude Code plugin.

Claude Code

claude mcp add smlibpy --scope user -- uvx --from "smlibpy[mcp]" smlibpy-mcp

ClassCAD MCP

AWV Informatik

The ClassCAD engine as WebAssembly, driven from Node, with snapshots and mass properties. Free for private use and evaluation after a one-time sign-in to a free classcad.ch account; STEP export and commercial use need a paid tier. Its docs recommend the Claude Code plugin over claude mcp add.

FreeCAD MCP

neka-nat (open source)

The most starred CAD MCP server for an open-source CAD app. Install the add-on into FreeCAD 1.0 or 1.1, start its RPC server from the add-on, then add the server to your client. Most tools can return a screenshot of the FreeCAD view, and it can run FEM analysis with CalculiX. Older alternatives (bonninr/freecad_mcp, contextform/freecad-mcp) have not been updated since 2025.

Autodesk Fusion MCP Server

Autodesk (official)

Built into Fusion desktop since May 2026. Turn it on in Preferences > General > API > “Fusion MCP Server (runs locally on this device)”. In Claude Desktop, add Autodesk Fusion from Settings > Connectors > Browse connectors (Autodesk's docs say not to add it as a custom connector). Other clients use the local URL. Autodesk's own caveat: not yet reliable for complex models or full assemblies. Community alternatives: fusion360-mcp-server (93 tools including STEP and STL export, interference checks and view sheets; marked beta).

Onshape FeatureScript MCP

PTC / Onshape (official, early access)

PTC's official server, in early access through Onshape Labs since August 2026. It writes FeatureScript (Onshape's language for custom features), checks the errors and inspects the geometry, rather than modelling parts feature by feature. Subscribe in the Onshape App Store, then sign in from your client.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http onshape https://fs-mcp.labs.onshape.app/mcp

onshape-mcp / jarvis-onshape-mcp

hedless, ReshefElisha (open source)

For general modelling in Onshape, community servers call the Onshape REST API with your API keys (from dev-portal.onshape.com). jarvis-onshape-mcp, built on hedless/onshape-mcp, adds shaded multi-view pictures and per-feature size and mass changes so the model can see what each feature did, and installs as a Claude Code plugin.

OpenSCAD MCP

RobertCoop (open source)

Renders, sections, measurements (including watertightness and printability) and interference checks for OpenSCAD scripts. OpenSCAD makes meshes, so there is no STEP; for simple printable parts that is often fine. Needs OpenSCAD installed.

Claude Code

claude mcp add openscad --transport stdio -- uvx openscad-mcp

Blender MCP

ahujasid (open source)

The most starred server on this page by far, for Blender scenes and meshes: modelling, materials, and pictures from any angle. It is not a precision CAD tool (no exact solids or STEP), but it is the right one for organic shapes, scenes and renders. The package was renamed from blender-mcp to mcp-for-blender.

How to connect a CAD MCP server

Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)

  • Remote servers (such as BuildCAD AI): Customize > Connectors > + Add > Add custom connector, then paste the URL. Pro and Max users add it themselves; on Team and Enterprise an owner adds it for the organization. The Free plan allows one custom connector. Claude connects from Anthropic's cloud, so localhost URLs do not work here.
  • Local servers (FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, Blender, build123d-mcp) work in Claude Desktop only: Settings > Developer > Edit Config opens claude_desktop_config.json (macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/, Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\). Restart Claude after editing.

claude_desktop_config.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "freecad": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["freecad-mcp"] },
    "openscad": { "command": "uvx", "args": ["openscad-mcp"] }
  }
}

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> for remote servers, claude mcp add <name> -- <command> [args] for local ones. Add --scope user to use a server in every project, or --scope project to share it through the repo's .mcp.json.

claude mcp add --transport http buildcad-ai https://buildcad.ai/api/mcp
claude mcp add freecad --scope user -- uvx freecad-mcp

Cursor and VS Code

Cursor reads ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project): url for remote servers, command and args for local ones, as in the snippets above. VS Code uses .vscode/mcp.json with a top-level servers key and a type; a Cursor-style mcpServers block is ignored there.

.vscode/mcp.json

{
  "servers": {
    "buildcad-ai": { "type": "http", "url": "https://buildcad.ai/api/mcp" }
  }
}

ChatGPT

ChatGPT only connects to remote servers with a public HTTPS URL: Plugins > + > Add custom MCP server, on the web. OpenAI's help center (October 2026) says full custom MCP servers are available on Business and Enterprise/Edu plans; Pro gets read and fetch actions only. Local servers need a tunnel. We have not tested the BuildCAD AI server in ChatGPT.

FAQ

CAD MCP questions

What is a CAD MCP server?

A small program that exposes CAD actions as tools an AI assistant can call through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard Anthropic published in 2024 that Claude, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT now support. Some servers drive a desktop CAD app you already have (Fusion, FreeCAD, Blender); others run a CAD kernel directly (build123d, SMLib, ClassCAD, OpenSCAD) so the AI writes the model as code.

Is there an MCP server for Fusion 360?

Yes. Since May 2026 Fusion has a built-in MCP server: enable it in Preferences > General > API, and it listens on http://127.0.0.1:27182/mcp while Fusion is open. In Claude Desktop you add it from the connector directory (Autodesk Fusion); in Cursor or VS Code you add the local URL. Autodesk says it is not yet reliable for complex models or full assemblies. Community servers such as fusion360-mcp-server add more specific tools.

Is there a FreeCAD MCP server?

Yes: neka-nat/freecad-mcp is the most starred one (about 2,900 GitHub stars in October 2026). You install its add-on in FreeCAD 1.0 or 1.1, start the RPC server from the add-on, and add uvx freecad-mcp to your AI client. It returns screenshots of the FreeCAD view so the model can see what it built.

Can Claude design CAD models?

Yes, through an MCP server. Claude writes CAD code or calls CAD tools, and the server builds the geometry. The results are much better when the server sends back pictures and measurements, because the model cannot see the part otherwise. For 3D printing, a server with exact solids and STEP export (build123d, SMLib, ClassCAD, FreeCAD, Fusion or the hosted BuildCAD AI server) gives you a part you can still edit in normal CAD.

Can I use a CAD MCP server with ChatGPT?

Only remote servers with a public HTTPS URL. In October 2026, OpenAI's help center says full custom MCP servers are available on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu plans (Pro gets read and fetch only), on the web, under Plugins > + > Add custom MCP server. Local servers such as FreeCAD MCP need a tunnel.

Do CAD MCP servers cost money?

Most are free and open source. What can cost money is the CAD program behind them (a Fusion licence, SolidWorks), the engine's commercial tier (ClassCAD), and the AI subscription that does the thinking. The BuildCAD AI server is free with a free account, with a daily limit of 300 CAD runs.

Which CAD MCP server is best for 3D printing?

One that returns exact solids and lets the AI check its work: renders, hole and wall measurements, and a printability check. build123d-mcp (local, open source) and the hosted BuildCAD AI server both do this with build123d; OpenSCAD MCP is good for simple printable parts but exports meshes only. If you already model in Fusion or FreeCAD, use their servers so the result stays in your usual tool.

Try a CAD MCP server with nothing to install

Add one URL to Claude or Cursor and ask for a part: a bracket for two M4 screws, a case for a Raspberry Pi 5. Your AI writes the CAD, sees the pictures and checks, and saves a design you open with sliders and download as STEP, STL or 3MF.
