Gridfinity tool insert with cutouts for a screwdriver and a set of hex keys

A Gridfinity insert with a pocket for each tool so every tool goes back in its place: a screwdriver (30 mm handle, 95 mm long, 6 x 75 mm shaft) and a set of 7 metric L hex keys from 1.5 to 6 mm, each with a finger slot to lift it out. The default is 5 x 3 cells and 5 units tall (209.5 x 125.5 x 38.8 mm). Set the handle and shaft sizes, the long and short arms of the smallest and largest key, and the gap around each tool: the insert grows by whole cells when the tools need it.

Our AI designer made it from a written description of the tools, the way it can make one for yours: give it each tool's length, width and thickness from calipers. The arms of the middle keys are spread evenly between the smallest and largest, so check them against your own set before printing. The flat top sits at the standard height, so another bin stacks on it, and it prints feet down without supports.

Parameters

Every slider in the viewer above, with the range the model accepts. The model rebuilds valid at both ends of each range.

ParameterRangeDefaultWhat it changes
Screwdriver handle diameter10 to 40 mm30 mmDiameter of the screwdriver handle at its widest. The pocket sinks to 60% of it, so the handle sits half buried.
Screwdriver handle length40 to 140 mm95 mmLength of the handle, from its end to where the shaft comes out.
Screwdriver shaft diameter2 to 12 mm6 mmDiameter of the shaft. Its pocket is stepped so the shaft lies level with the handle.
Screwdriver shaft length20 to 120 mm75 mmLength of the shaft out of the handle, tip included.
Long arm of the 6 mm key50 to 120 mm90 mmLong arm of your 6 mm key, measured on the outside of the bend.
Long arm of the 1.5 mm key30 to 90 mm45 mmLong arm of your 1.5 mm key. The keys in between get evenly spaced lengths.
Short arm of the 6 mm key15 to 50 mm32 mmShort arm of your 6 mm key, measured on the outside of the bend.
Short arm of the 1.5 mm key8 to 30 mm14 mmShort arm of your 1.5 mm key.
Gap around each tool0.2 to 1 mm0.5 mmGap between each tool and its pocket on every side. 0.5 mm suits hard handles and bare steel; use about 0.8 mm for a rubber grip.

Print notes

Orientation
Feet down on the bed, as modelled, with the pockets facing up.
Supports
None.
Material
PLA or PETG
Layer height

Settings
15% infill is plenty: the insert is a solid block, so infill sets most of the filament and print time
Hardware

Time and filament
About 11 h 15 min and 250 g at the default size: a rough estimate from the model's volume and surface (PLA, 15% infill, about 1 mm of walls, 0.2 mm layers), not a slicer.
  • The middle keys' arm lengths are interpolated. Set the 4 arm sliders from your 1.5 mm and 6 mm keys, then check the others against your set: a key longer than its pocket will not fit.
  • Each key pocket is as wide as the key across its corners plus the gap, so a key fits whichever face it lies on, and as deep as the key plus 1 mm.
  • Another Gridfinity bin stacks on the flat top at 33.8 mm, so the insert can sit under one in a drawer or on a shelf.

How it was designed

Designed with buildcad's AI agent, checked by the buildcad team. This is the request it started from and an edited account of what it did (more on how text to CAD works).

The request

A Gridfinity bin with a pocket for each of my tools so they always go back in the same place: one screwdriver (handle 30 mm diameter and 95 mm long, shaft 6 mm diameter and 75 mm long) and my set of 7 metric L-shaped hex keys, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm (long arms from about 45 to 90 mm, short arms from 14 to 32 mm). Each tool lies flat in its own cutout with a finger slot to lift it out, and another bin should still stack on top.

  1. 1

    The sizes from the request

The agent took the screwdriver's sizes as given. The request gave only a range for the hex key arms, so it spread them evenly from 45 to 90 mm (long arms) and 14 to 32 mm (short arms) and put both ends on sliders, then built on a solid Gridfinity bin from buildcad's Gridfinity helper so another bin still stacks on top.

  2. 2

    Outlines from the description

Each tool became an outline seen from above: the screwdriver as a 95 x 30 mm handle and a 75 x 6 mm shaft, each key as an L of two rectangles. The key pockets are as wide as the key across its corners (6.93 mm for the 6 mm key) plus 0.5 mm each side, in a diagonal staircase so the short arms nest between the rows with 4 mm of plastic between pockets.

  3. 3

    Depths and finger slots

The handle sinks to 60% of its diameter (18 mm) with the shaft pocket stepped to 6 mm so both lie level; each key sinks its full size plus 1 mm. A 22 mm finger slot crosses the front of the handle pocket, and the keys' finger slots alternate between the end of the long arm and the tip of the short arm so neighbours do not merge.

  4. 4

The first build was a cell too deep

The first build came out 5 x 4 cells (209.5 x 167.5 mm), and the overhang check failed at 5.8% of the surface. The layout was 117.7 mm deep and the agent found that 115 mm still fits 3 cells, so it trimmed the finger room under the handle from 10 to 8 mm. The insert became 5 x 3 cells (209.5 x 125.5 mm) and the check passed at 4.4%.

  5. 5

    Measured with rays

Rays down into the pockets measured 18.0 mm at the handle, 6.0 mm at the shaft, 7.0 mm at the 6 mm key and 2.5 mm at the 1.5 mm key, with the flat top at 33.8 mm. Its slider sweep ran out of time; our own sweep built every slider at its minimum and maximum as one valid body.

  6. 6

What it left to the maker

Its reply asks the maker to measure their own keys and set the four arm sliders, since a key longer than its pocket will not fit, and notes that the insert grows by whole cells when the tools get bigger.

One run of the agent: 3 min 56 s, about $0.56 of model time at list price (claude-sonnet-5-5). The model code behind this page is the code it wrote, unchanged.
